HSC’s first Artist in Residence, Xavier White’s Mind Expanding Metaphors, builds on ‘The Phosphenes of Qualia’ (2017) success looking at metaphors around cognition, thinking and consciousness. Xavier presents an exploration into the new field of ‘neuroethetics’. He continues his own lived experience as a head injury survivor, birthing an ongoing fascination with how our brain’s messages influence who we are and how we operate as human beings. Neural activity, the brain’s architectural structure and ultimately the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness are explored. As in previous exhibitions, an auto-ethnographic approach to his artworks is revealed. For example, ‘First Steps’ (a painting exhibited in My Human Campaign 2016) shows an attempt to re-learn/cognate neurologically how to walk again post head injury: How do I take a step? What goes on when communicating brain messages to physical actions? Is it words, neural language or metaphors of the mind?
